Dr. Amy Clewell is a Senior Research Assistant in the Natural and Medicinal Products Division of AIBMR Life Sciences.

Dr. Clewell earned a bachelor’s of science degree in Biology from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, and a doctoral degree in Naturopathic Medicine from Bastry University in Kenmore, Washington.

Besides post-graduate clinical experience as a licensed naturopathic physician, Dr. Clewell’s work in research began as a Research Technician at Indiana University for three years where she worked in Dr. Thomas Donahue’s lab on a translational initiation project using S. cerevisiae as a model. She continued her research pursuits for another five years working in Dr. Karla Kirkegaard’s lab at the University of Colorado on the molecular biology of polio and hepatitis C viruses. When Dr. Kirkegaard left the University of Colorado for Stanford University, Amy joined her as a Research Technician and Lab Manager at the Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto, California. Some of Amy’s research has appeared in co-authored papers that have been published the Journal of Biological Chemistry.

After years of research in microbiology and virology, Dr. Clewell pursued a doctorate in naturopathic medicine at Bastyr University, where she earned her doctorate in naturopathic medicine. While a student at Bastyr University, she designed and worked on a retrospective chart analysis in the management of hypertension in women at the Bastyr Center for Natural Health. Much to her credit and while a student at Bastyr University, Amy co-founded the school’s first student research club, which hosted bi-weekly journal clubs, as well as scientists and clinicians as speakers. Additionally, she worked on several research projects at Bastyr University, and participated in studies at the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle. For three years she was Co-Chair of the Site Committee and a Site Volunteer for the Alternative Health Care Access Campaign (AHAC) that provides alternative health care to low income and homeless residents of Seattle.

Dr. Clewell’s particular interests have been in selective estrogen receptor modulators and their effects in the body both in terms of promising pharmaceuticals as well as botanicals. She also has interests in general nutrition, complimentary and alternative treatments for anxiety and depression, physical medicine, and women’s health.
